Meet Hannah Burgess

July 7, 2021

Hey everyone! I am a senior at John Brown University studying Family and Human Services. This summer, I am super excited to be expanding my skill set by working with the Scott Family Amazeum as the Early Childhood Intern!

For as long as I can remember, I have loved working with kids and always find it fascinating how imaginative they are. When I read the description for this internship and found out that I could spend my summer promoting creativity, curiosity, and community for kids and their caregivers, I thought “count me in!”.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to facilitate hands-on, creative play that helps kids become interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), while also developing some new avenues for parent communication through the Amazeum!

This internship gives me countless career development opportunities that will help me grow my interpersonal skills, group management, customer service, communication, and give me an enhanced foundation to build my career. At the Scott Family Amazeum, each day brings something new and exciting and I can’t wait to see what else this summer brings!

"We’re basically letting them explore in a very natural and easy way. They are basically seeing the creatures and saying ‘oooh, a fish,’ or ‘a dolphin.' We’re not getting too specific. It’s really more of a sensory experience than a marine biology lesson."

I love the internship because it’s almost like we're ‘hiding’ learning through play. It’s really funny because the kids are just thinking they’re playing and messing with different materials, but we’re teaching them these big picture ideas like cause and effect. We’re hiding those big ideas inside really fun activities.
